Printing, editing, layout, distribution, design, illustration, writing: making books. Libros Mutantes, the independent publishing fair, arrives at 2025 with an invitation to take action in front of the infinite scroll of the screen.
The new edition of the great spring event at La Casa Encendida de Fundación Montemadrid focuses on the tangible and the tactile, the solid and the intellectual, the sensual and the perceptible, to bring together the most creative and iconoclastic international publishing scene and become a meeting point for publishers, artists and designers who, in turbulent and volatile times, are committed to a revolutionary gesture: printing books, fanzines, magazines and experimental publications in the hope that, when the storm passes, some of it will remain.
Libros Mutantes Madrid Art Book Fair offers, between 25 and 27 April, an open and participative programme. On this occasion, the publishing fair will occupy new spaces within La Casa Encendida, with participants from countries such as China, Indonesia and the United States. All of them have been selected from an open call and represent very diverse styles, languages and formats, exploring the balance between immediacy and resistance in independent publishing.
This edition brings back the Atlas section, which over the years has hosted exhibitions and talks devoted to unveiling the independent publishing scene in other countries. On this occasion, Atlas: Taipei, curated by Taipei Art Book Fair & TPadd assoc. and held with the collaboration of Acción Cultural Española AC/E, proposes a dialogue with the vibrant publishing scene of the Chinese city in search of differential features and shared languages. The collaboration will take the form of an exhibition of graphic work that vindicates the communicative power of the poster, a special section of Asian publications as part of the fair and a talk by its artistic directors as part of Mutant Perspectives.
The Libros Mutantes 2025 conference cycle will bring together international creators who explore design, desktop publishing and visual culture from innovative perspectives. It will feature the participation of Fabulous Future, a Dutch collective that reflects on the power of architecture, space and design through experimental formats. Also giving a talk will be Swedish graphic designer Johanna Burai, whose collaborative practice spans contemporary art, music and fashion. From Taipei Art Book Fair and TPadd assoc., publishers and designers will analyse the impact of subcultures on mass culture and alternative publishing circuits, while Bohdan Kuzmich and Vlad Boyko will explore the intersection between typography, technology and play in design. For its part, the Hispanic Wave platform will discuss Hispanic heritage in contemporary culture, addressing with equal parts seriousness and satire its influence on aesthetic narratives and spaces of cultural resistance.
In collaboration with Acción Cultural Española AC/E, Embassy of the Netherlands, Embassy of Sweden.
