Where Will the Bird that Can’t Fly Go?
Within the programming of
25th Anniversary of GeneracionesWhere Will the Bird that Can’t Fly Go?, curated by Ángel Calvo Ulloa and Julia Castelló, brings together artists whose works are connected in some way with the idea of generosity. As part of the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of Generaciones, the competition for young talents organised by Fundación Montemadrid, the exhibition presents the current works of artists who have helped to shape the history of the prize.
The show stems from a reflection on the word generation, which—like generate and generosity—has its etymological origin in the Latin root gen-. With this starting point, the curators create an itinerary through artistic practices that emerge from an act of generosity, that materialise through collaboration, that imply responsible modes of production or that seek to give something back to society.
The rooms at La Casa Encendida host pieces, activations and installations by Javier Álvarez, Salvador Cidrás and Vicente Blanco, Santiago Cirugeda, Pedro G. Romero, Patricia Gómez and María Jesús González, Marta de Gonzalo and Publio Pérez Prieto, Laila Hotait and Nadia Hotait, Susanna Inglada, Juan del Junco, Carlos Maciá, and Alberto Peral.
Under the title Where Will I Who Can’t Take You Go?, the exhibition simultaneously extends to three nearby independent venues for contemporary creation and reflection, which will host some of the most recent Generaciones winners: Agnes Essonti Luque (Conciencia Afro), Sara Santana (Araña) and Raúl Silva (La Parcería).
The curators, Ángel Calvo Ulloa and Julia Castelló, are themselves past winners—in 2014 and 2018, respectively—of Inéditos, the other competition that Fundación Montemadrid organises, in this case for emerging curators.
